UPDATE 1-15-05
Hi Sarah,
Devon has a new home! The new owner found him through your website. Thank you so much for your help!
I had a chance to visit the new owner's farm and I know several of her students and got a good recommendation from her vet.
Apparently, a lot of his lameness was due to the way the farrier was trimming him. Once I got him back to Mom's house and started using my farrier again, he went sound. (He does have navicular but apparently, a good farrier can keep him sound enough to work comfortably.)
A woman saw Devon on your website and contacted her trainer. The trainer came out and visited with him a bit, then decided she really liked him. He is now living on her 96 acre farm near Harrisonburg with 15 other horses, three or four of which are retirees. The new owner strongly believes in keeping horses for life, too - she just had one put down at the age of 37, after having owned him for 20 years.
I'm so happy with his new home! And I think he'll be very happy there.
Again, thank you! I know Devon wasn't one of your dire rescue cases but he now has a good chance for a long, happy life, thanks to you.
Kelly

***NOT A LFSAR HORSE but he is being placed as a favor to his owner. All policies and procedures of LFSAR adoptions will apply as well as a $200 adoption fee***

He’s a 16h bay Cleveland Bay/Morgan cross gelding, 15 years old. He is up to date on all shots, deworming, and trimming, and the vet and farrier will be working on finding a shoeing solution that might make him sound enough for riding.

While his basic health needs have been met, he has basically been a ‘pasture ornament’ for the past six or eight years. The lameness was just discovered when I started working him again this spring.

Training: He is extremely green and would require a skilled rider, though he is very athletic and, if he can be made comfortable enough for riding, he has a lovely rocking-chair canter. However, due to the navicular, he may not be rideable at all. He does have a tendency to buck when he is uncomfortable.

Temperament: He needs an experienced handler. He is a lot of horse and he knows it. However, he really enjoys being around people and will come to meet you when he sees you walking into the field with his halter. He’s very mischievous and playful; while he has not had a lot of under-saddle work, he likes ground work. He’s a very easy keeper and is pasture sound; the only major management issue he has is that he will not tolerate being stalled. To prevent injury to him and major damage to the stall, he should be kept in a pasture with a run-in.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

Special Needs: He has just been diagnosed with navicular syndrome and, due to an old hip injury, would benefit from regular chiropractic work
